Thoughtful communication: a moment to understand

Simple reflection prompts about listening, empathy, and clearer conversations.

Listen for the meaning

In an everyday conversation, consider what the other person is trying to communicate before planning your answer. Ask a clarifying question when a detail is unclear.

Describe your experience

A specific description is easier to discuss than a broad accusation. Explain the situation you observed and how you experienced it. Leave room for the other person to describe their perspective.

Check your interpretation

You may understand a sentence differently from how it was intended. A question such as ‘Do you mean…?’ can help you check that interpretation before responding.

A prompt for today

What is one question I could ask to understand someone better before offering my own view?
