Self-awareness: make room for reflection
A short reflection on noticing emotions and patterns, alongside the Emotional Intelligence Handbook.
Start with a specific moment
Choose an ordinary interaction from your day. Write down what happened in plain terms before deciding what it meant. Separating an event from your interpretation can make a reflection more precise.
Find a word for the feeling
What emotion would you use to describe that moment? Consider whether there was more than one feeling. You do not have to judge an emotion or solve it immediately to name it.
Notice a pattern
Ask whether similar situations bring up similar feelings. A useful journal note might be: ‘When this happens, I tend to feel this and respond this way.’ Treat the note as something to explore, not a permanent description of who you are.
A prompt for today
What did I notice about my response today, and what would I like to understand better next time?
